ALMOST SUMMER HOURS
Tuesday through Saturday
10 AM to 5 PM

Free Time is a consignment store for the outdoors in downtown Nelson, BC. We provide a connection point for locals and visitors to find gently used outdoor gear for new adventures and consign gear that’s no longer in use.

We switch stock with the seasons and focus on gear that we know works best in the Kootenays. Depending on the time of year, you’ll find gear and clothing for biking, hiking, camping, climbing, mountaineering, paddling, skiing, snowboarding, and more in the shop.

BACK HOME
WHO WE ARE

We all want a little more free time to recreate and do the things we love. We started Free Time to help keep the gear that has taken you places going, and to make accessing the outdoors a little easier on the community and our planet. Outdoor recreation is integrated with regular life here, and gear is kind of like the currency of the Kootenays. Basements and backyard sheds overflow with it. People are keen to share what they have with their neighbors; they are resourceful, care about principles like reuse and repair, and understand the effort it takes to get things to and from this area. We love to hear the stories behind the stuff that comes through the shop (some items even cycle back through for a visit here and there).

CAMILLE

Camille moved to the Kootenays to farm sheep but ended up realizing what the area needed wasn’t more lambs. It needed the kind of store that she grew up frequenting as a young person falling in love with outdoor recreation - a used gear shop. These places invite you to linger. They represent community and access and make you feel like the world outdoors is your oyster. In winter 2021, she found a tiny empty storefront in Rossland’s iconic old OK Store building and gave it a go. With the support of the community, OK Gear went, and outgrew the small space within a couple years. She moved the shop to the little city of Nelson in fall of 2024 and gave it a new name. In her free time, Camille loves to ride bikes and horses, run, ski, and plan silly objectives that usually combine food and music with recreation.

WILL

Will is another face you’ve likely seen around the shop. He moved out to the Kootenays last fall after graduating from Emily Carr with a printmaking degree. He grew up running up and down the mountains and river valleys of central Idaho and has always felt that the most fun people to be around in the outdoors are those who have spent the least amount of money to be there. His free time is spent skiing, running, reading something obscure, and drawing.
We acknowledge that the land on which we operate is the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa, the Syilx, and the Sinixt peoples, home to the Métis and many diverse Aboriginal persons.
