Free Time is a consignment store for the outdoors in downtown Nelson, BC. We provide a connection point for locals and visitors to find gently used outdoor gear for new adventures and consign gear that’s no longer in use.

We switch stock with the seasons and focus on gear that we know works best in the Kootenays. Depending on the time of year, you’ll find gear and clothing for biking, hiking, camping, climbing, mountaineering, paddling, skiing, snowboarding, and more in the shop.

WHAT WE TAKE:

We accept gently used gear and clothing from reputable outdoor brands, and what we’re taking changes with the seasons. We generally take summer gear from early March to early September, and winter gear from mid September to late March. Items need to be current: <7-10 years for technical gear, <10 years for clothing (some exceptions for vintage appeal); clean, complete, and in good or better condition (small repairs typically OK).

Spring conditions have officially arrived in the Kootenays! Read on to find out what we’re accepting:

    BIKE GEAR
    Modern mountain bike and gravel components, hip packs, bikepacking bags, racks & accessories, flat-style MTB shoes, clothing, eyewear

      RUNNING GEAR
      Trail shoes (in great shape i.e. top 1/3 of their lifespan), running vests, clothing (technical layers, windbreakers, shorts, hats, etc)
       
      CAMPING/HIKING/BACKPACKING GEAR
      Backpacks (<70L), day packs, trekking poles, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, stoves, cookware, accessories (stuff sacks, headlamps, etc), clothing, hiking boots & shoes (in great shape i.e. top 1/3 of their lifespan)

      CLIMBING/MOUNTAINEERING GEAR
      Climbing shoes, chalk bags, crash pads, mountaineering boots, crampons

      PADDLING/WATER SPORTS GEAR
      Drysuits, paddling tops/pants, wetsuits, paddles, pogies, dry bags, some SUPs & whitewater kayaks (limited space for large items)

    UPDATES FOR SUMMER ‘25
    We are no longer accepting the following items:

    • Road bike jerseys/shoes/most components (MTB/gravel stuff  OK)
    • Bike trainers
    • Car roof racks/bars (modern, CLEAN, tray-style hitch bike racks OK) 
    • Water filters (unless new in packaging)
    • Most electronics (unless new in packagaing)
     

    WHAT WE DON’T TAKE:

    • Safety-related items (helmets, ropes, harnesses, avalanche transceivers, etc) or undergarments (padded bike shorts, socks, technical underwear) unless brand new in original packing
    • Team sports equipment
    • Department store brands

    GEAR EXPECTATIONS:

    • All items must be clean, complete, and fully functional 
    • Clothing, outerwear, and sleeping bags must be freshly laundered
    • Wipe down footwear & gear with a damp cloth
    • Items that are dirty, smelly, have broken zippers, unpatched tears/holes, or large stains are not eligible for consignment


    PAYOUT PROCESS:

    When your items sell, funds go onto your account as store credit. You can spend your credit like cash in the shop (and we’ll give you a 10% BONUS on your earnings) or request a payout via e-transfer. Payouts are processed every Friday.

    PAYOUT SCALE
    $1 - $150: 50% - 50% split
    $151 - $300: 60% your way
    $301 - $450: 70% your way
    $451+: 80% your way

    *The amount you earn is based on the selling price of each consigned item (i.e. a jacket priced at $100 = $50 to you)
